Windows 11 October 2022 Update: New Features & Changes

With the Windows 11 2022 Update, Microsoft has changed its update cadence and will now ship feature drops every few months, known as 'Moments'. This is a way to ship new features outside of the big annual feature update (which itself is being reduced to a servicing release next year). Another plus is that like the update in February earlier this year and some recent Windows 10 feature updates, the feature drops will install on top of 22H2 and previous Moments - though whether enablement packages will be used or the feature drop will be an optional regular cumulative update is currently unknown.

This is the first such feature drop, known as Moment 1 (KB5019509 is the KB), and includes several new features including tabs in File Explorer, a new taskbar overflow feature, suggested actions on copy (for the US, Canada and Mexico only for now), a more consistent design for the Open with menu/app picker, a new Photos app and more.

UPDATE 10/4: Features in this update are now being tested with Insiders in the Release Preview Channel who have KB5017389 installed - build 22621.608. The features should be available for users on stable Windows 11 later this month. A

UPDATE 10/11: A week later, KB5019509 (22621.675) has been released and now has all these features enabled. This will likely be the stable Moment 1 update.

UPDATE 10/18: Yep. KB5019509 is rolling out to stable!

UPDATE 11/13: The Patch Tuesday update for November 2022 has all the features from KB5019509 (Moment 1, released October 18th) broadly available!
