It's no secret that the custom ROM scene within the Android community is on life support.
We used to have a dozen or so high quality ROMs to pick from. . .
But over time, that talent was either hired by an outside company
Or they were put off by the way the community behaves
There are a number of reasons behind the decline of custom ROMs on Android
But I have a theory. . .
I believe the current and upcoming wave of vibe coders will finally bring the custom ROM community back to life.
Let me show you what I've been seeing lately. . .
Vibe Coders Arrive
You may have noticed there are a couple new Windows emulators that have been released lately.
One is called WinNative
And the other new emulator is called BannerHub
Both have been submitted to the Emulation on Android subreddit
And it's clear that both of the teams who are working on these are leveraging AI coding tools, like Claude and Codex
We're seeing similar features popping up on these emulators. . .
Features that have recently popped up on other projects like Pluvia, Winlator Bionic, and more.
Which some may look at as borrowing or stealing code
But that's actually one of the major benefits of open source software
These new devs are leveraging the work previous projects were able to handle
And other developers within the community will likely be able to salvage some of the code from these newer projects for their own.
Vibe Coding Custom ROMs
When I started seeing these individual features being picked here and there. . .
It reminded me of a time when Android's custom ROM community had a lot of projects cherry picking specific features for their own
And while some will argue that this isn't the ideal approach. . .
I think this could help to bring some new life and some new enthusiasm to a community that is seemingly on life support.
It certainly doesn't solve the issue where OEMs are making aggressive changes to prevent or block unlocking the bootloader of a phone.
But I think it's definitely going to move the needle
Especially for those with really old phones because they prefer to keep the same device for 10+ years.
Honestly, though. I think we're going to see a massive influx of software launches across the globe.
Similar to how people described the industrial revolution
. . .but one focused solely on software. From native applications to fully custom firmware
I think we're in for a big wave of digital features and services.
and with Android's foundations still being embedded within the open source community
there's going to be a lot of options for us to pick form
