By mid-1940, The British had cracked Germany’s highest level of military encryption Enigma, giving them tremendous insight into what was being said by the Germans.

Meanwhile, Soviet military intelligence was not what it had once been, with Stalin often filtering it for evidence that matched his own preconceptions.

Over the next year, evidence reached the British that the Germans were preparing to betray their Soviet allies.
