In this short clip, Ilya breaks down why experienced engravers prefer hand sanding steel before engraving instead of using powered sanding machines. High-speed machine sanding creates friction and heat, producing microscopic hardened particles on the steel’s surface as they rapidly cool. Those hardened spots can interfere with clean engraving cuts, damage tools, and make consistent line work much harder.
