About this video
Are Pakistan and Bangladesh opening a new chapter in their relations? Having weathered civil war, atrocities, and decades of mistrust following their separation in 1971, the two countries now appear to be entering a cautious but significant phase of renewed engagement. In this video, we analyse why ties between these two major South Asian, Muslim-majority states are warming after more than 50 years of distance.
Signals of this thaw have been the rise in trade, diplomatic visits, and a softening of rhetoric over historical grievances. Also impacting the apparent Islamabad-Dhaka rapprochement has been the fall of Bangladeshโs longtime Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the protection offered her by New Delhi, precipitating the rapid cooling of IndiaโBangladesh relations, and shifting regional dynamics. All of which have created new strategic incentives for both sides to rethink their positions. Chinaโs growing involvement in the region adds a further layer to this unfolding geopolitical realignment. But is this the start of a genuine thaw or merely a temporary recalibration driven by political change? This video examines the historical roots of the split between East and West Pakistan, the lingering trauma of 1971, and the reasons previous attempts at normalisation failed. It also breaks down what Pakistan and Bangladesh each stand to gain by closer ties, why an anti-India alliance remains unlikely, and what this shift could mean for South Asian geopolitics more broadly. A case study in how even the most strained post-secession relationships can evolve when political, economic, and strategic interests coincide.
