Why Albania Cut Ties with the USSR After WWII 🇦🇱

About this video

After WWII, Albania was one of the Soviet Union’s closest allies. Enver Hoxha idolized Stalin, accepted Soviet aid, and built his regime around hardline Marxism.

But when Khrushchev began de-Stalinization, Hoxha saw it as treason. By the early 1960s, Albania had denounced Moscow, quit the Warsaw Pact’s orbit, and turned instead to Mao’s China—the new symbol of “pure socialism.”

That alliance didn’t last either. By the late 1970s, Hoxha accused even China of betraying Marxism. The result was total isolation: bunkers, sealed borders, and paranoia.

In our linked Short, we explore another Cold War split that shook the communist world: How Yugoslavia broke free from Stalin’s control in 1948.
