Few people know that just off the coast of Florida, at a depth of 20 meters in the ocean, lies the world's only underwater lab called Aquarius Reef Base. Every year, NASA sends 5-6 researchers and astronauts—yes, astronauts—to this lab for several weeks as part of a special project called Project NEEMO (NASA’s Extreme Environment Mission Operations). These NASA scientists are referred to as "Aquanauts." But that's not all. NASA also has an autonomous underwater vehicle named ORPHEUS, which is diving 10 km deep into the ocean to conduct research. But why is a space agency like NASA working in the depths of the ocean? After all, the U.S. has a separate organization, NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration), specifically for ocean research.
