Understanding Message Layer Security (MLS) 🔐

Message Layer Security (MLS) is a cryptographic protocol designed to provide secure and private communication for group messaging applications. It addresses the challenges of encrypting messages exchanged within a group while maintaining confidentiality, authenticity, and scalability. MLS aims to ensure that only authorized group members can access the messages and that the messages cannot be read by anyone else, including the service provider.

MLS operates by employing a combination of cryptographic techniques, including key encapsulation, digital signatures, and symmetric encryption. It allows group members to cooperatively derive a shared group encryption key while also enabling efficient adding or removing of members from the group.

One of the key features of MLS is its focus on providing forward secrecy, which means that even if a group member's cryptographic keys are compromised in the future, the previously sent messages remain secure. This is achieved through the use of "treekem," a key derivation mechanism that allows keys to be derived securely in a hierarchical fashion.

MLS also ensures post-compromise security, meaning that even if an attacker gains control of the server hosting the group chat, they cannot decrypt past messages. This is possible due to the use of "commit" and "handshake" mechanisms that protect against retrospective decryption.

The protocol is particularly relevant for applications requiring secure group messaging, such as collaboration tools, instant messaging platforms, and other group communication services. MLS is designed to be flexible, allowing for various use cases and adapting to different security and performance requirements.
