What is liposuction

Liposuction is one of the most frequently performed cosmetic surgeries in the world. Although it is considered a simple procedure, it requires good preoperative planning and not everybody is a candidate for the procedure. With this technique, it provides an improved shape of your body by removing unwanted or excess fat in target areas. Liposuction can be done as a freestanding procedure, with no need to be combined with other surgeries. In liposuction a small incision is made, measuring approximately 2 to 5 mm depending on the tube called a cannula that is used. The surgeon then injects a fluid to control bleeding, and anesthesia is required during the procedure. A cannula connected to a suction tube is inserted and the fat is then removed with a back and forth motion. When the contour is satisfactory, the surgeon stops the procedure. Liposuction can be performed in only small areas, but many times a significant amount of fat can be removed. There are different techniques and machines, and many times it is essentially the preference of the surgeon when it comes to which technique is most appropriate for the individual. You need to understand that liposuction is not a weight loss procedure that is not always recommended even if you have excess skin. For this reason, proper patient selection is important because at the end of the day, even if it is a minimally invasive procedure, the results can be less than satisfactory if you are not the proper candidate to undergo this technique.
