What is Big Data and What is it Used For?

Big data is data an organization gathers and collects that informs projects and analytics. Big data is more than a few records -- it’s the huge collection of structured, semistructured, and unstructured data that companies can draw insights from.

But, it’s not just defined by “a lot” of data. Big data is typically characterized by the three main “Vs”: volume, typically referring to terabytes, petabytes, and exabytes; variety of data types; and the velocity at which the data is generated, processed, and collected. But, some use even more Vs, including veracity, value, and variability of data, to determine if it’s “big.”
