IoT gateways are like typical network gateways that translate protocols, but specifically for IoT devices. They sit between where IoT devices operate, and the external network -- like the cloud, for instance. IoT gateways process and filter sensor data at the edge, so that only critical information is sent on to the cloud and avoids overwhelming the system.
