About this video
Experience the 17th century like never before as we travel across the Netherlands to eat and drink exactly like a Dutch Golden Age merchant. From the historic docks of Enkhuizen to the legendary "De Drie Fleschjes" in Amsterdam, we followed an authentic 1600s timeline to see if we could survive the lifestyle of the world's richest traders.
In this video, we perform the traditional "Kopstootje" ritual, taste test the iconic Amsterdamse Ossenworst, and discover why merchants drank beer for breakfast and coffee for business. We explore the real history of the VOC era through the flavors of Jenever, Hutspot, and traditional Ontbijtkoek.
While the Dutch merchant was a Calvinist who shunned fancy food presentations and preparations, their "simple" food was still flavored with expensive spices and the sugar loaf. How much of their cuisine is still around today?
Correction: 05:12 Enkhuizen (not Enkhoorn!)
