🔷 Introduction
➤ Introduced by Winston Royce in 1970
➤ Has 5 sequential phases
➤ Each phase must be completed before moving to the next
➤ Named “Waterfall” because the process flows top to bottom, like a waterfall.
🔶 Phases of Classical Waterfall Model
1️⃣ Requirements Analysis and Specification
→ Understand what the customer wants, not how
→ Customer & developer work together
→ Output: SRS (Software Requirement Specification) document
2️⃣ Design Phase
→ Convert requirements (SRS) into a software structure
→ Define architecture: high-level + detailed design
→ Output: SDD (Software Design Document)
3️⃣ Implementation and Unit Testing
→ Code is written using the design
→ Modules are built and tested individually (unit testing)
→ Developers use the SDD for coding guidelines
4️⃣ Integration and System Testing
→ All modules are integrated and tested together
→ Checks interaction and overall system behavior
→ Ensures system meets requirements, reduces bugs
5️⃣ Operation and Maintenance
→ Software is delivered, installed, and used
→ Maintenance includes:
→ Bug fixing
→ Updates
→ Performance improvement
📌 When to Use the Waterfall Model
→ Requirements are fixed and well understood
→ Project scope is short and stable
→ Tools & tech won’t change mid-project
→ Resources are well-prepared and available
✅ Advantages of Waterfall Model
✔ Simple and easy to implement
✔ Requirements are clearly defined and don’t change
✔ Progress is easy to track due to fixed phases
✔ Cost and delivery date are predictable
✔ Customers get clarity through structured reporting
