For the first time ever, astronauts aboard China’s Tiangong Space Station have used a hot-air oven to cook and bake food in orbit — a breakthrough that transforms the “space kitchen.” The Shenzhou-20 and Shenzhou-21 crew members baked chicken wings and steak using a smoke-free, zero-gravity oven designed by the China Astronaut Research and Training Center. The oven reaches 190°C, allowing real cooking with browning and crisping — not just reheating. Researchers say the oven uses high-temperature catalysis, multi-layer filtration, and built-in purification to make baking safe in microgravity. Engineers also added residue collectors and rotating baskets to stop food from floating. The innovation brings a new level of comfort and morale to long-duration missions, letting astronauts enjoy fresh, golden, and crispy meals — and even bake cakes or celebrate birthdays in space.
