Les Vikings pratiquaient la religion nordique ancienne, un système polythéiste centré sur des dieux comme Odin, Thor, Freyr et Freyja. Leur spiritualité était profondément liée à la nature et aux traditions orales, sans institutions religieuses structurées. Ils croyaient en un monde divisé en plusieurs royaumes, dont Asgard, où résidaient les dieux.

Le Walhalla (ou Valhöll en vieux norrois) était le palais d'Odin, où les guerriers morts au combat étaient accueillis par les Valkyries. Ces guerriers, appelés Einherjar, passaient leurs journées à s'entraîner pour la bataille finale de Ragnarök et leurs nuits à festoyer. Le Walhalla était décrit comme une immense salle aux 640 portes, chacune permettant à 800 guerriers de sortir simultanément pour combattre.

Avec l'expansion des Vikings et leurs contacts avec les sociétés chrétiennes, beaucoup se sont progressivement convertis au christianisme, notamment entre le XIe et XIIe siècle. Cependant, des éléments de leur ancienne religion ont perduré dans le folklore scandinave.

The Vikings followed Old Norse religion, a polytheistic belief system centered around gods like Odin, Thor, Freyr, and Freyja. Their faith was deeply tied to nature, rituals, and oral traditions rather than structured religious institutions. Over time, as Vikings expanded their territories and interacted with Christian societies, many gradually converted to Christianity, especially by the 11th and 12th centuries.

Valhalla, in Norse mythology, was the hall of slain warriors, ruled by Odin. It was depicted as a grand palace where warriors who died bravely in battle were welcomed by Valkyries, supernatural female figures who chose the most heroic fallen warriors. In Valhalla, these warriors, known as Einherjar, spent their days fighting each other for sport and their nights feasting on the flesh of a boar that magically regenerated each day. They drank liquor flowing from the udders of a goat and prepared for Ragnarök, the final battle where they would fight alongside Odin against the giants2.

The belief in Valhalla gave Vikings a fearless attitude toward death, motivating them to fight bravely in battle. It was not the only afterlife concept in Norse mythology—those who died of sickness or old age were believed to go to Hel, a different realm ruled by the goddess Hel.
