Understanding the Donbas Region and Its Significance in Ukraine

Donald Trump is preparing to meet with Ukrainian president in Washington, where he's expected to press Volodymyr Zelenskyy to surrender territory. Russia currently controls about a fifth of Ukrainian territory.

But Vladimir Putin has reportedly demanded that Ukrainian forces withdraw from parts of the Donetsk still held onto by Ukraine.

It would give Russia control of almost all of the Donbas, territory desired by the Russian president since the fall of the Soviet Union.
