About this video

The Data Encryption Standard (DES) is a symmetric key block cipher developed by IBM and adopted by the U.S. National Bureau of Standards in 1977. It encrypts data using the same secret key for both encryption and decryption, making it suitable for secure communication where both parties share the key.

DES operates on 64-bit blocks of data and uses a 56-bit effective key (the original key length is 64 bits, but 8 bits are used for parity). Internally, it uses a Feistel network composed of 16 rounds, where each round applies expansion, substitution using S-Boxes, permutation, and XOR with a round-specific subkey. This structure provides confusion and diffusion, which are essential properties for secure cryptographic transformation.

However, because its key size is only 56 bits, DES is now considered insecure against modern brute-force attacks. It has largely been replaced by Triple DES (3DES) and later AES. Despite this, DES remains historically important because its design influenced many modern encryption algorithms.
