Cellular Jail is where the British tortured Indian revolutionaries like Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, Batukeshwar Dutt, and Yogendra Shukla. It was called Kala Pani (Black Water) because very few people came out of this jail alive, or survived the brutal 1300 km boat journey there from mainland India to Port Blair in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands - an Indian Union Territory.

Cellular Jail was an experimental jail for the British in India which involved forced feeding, torture, forced labour, brutal beatings, and other unthinkable atrocities. Many great Indian freedom fighters and revolutionaries suffered here under the British in this jail. Many very hung in the gallows here too. The prison was finally closed when the Japanese invaded India, and the British were then thrown in the jail!

I also explain Savarkar's term Hindutva and how it changed the meaning of the word Hindu from a geographical term meaning people who lived below the Indus river to the religious term we know today as Hinduism.
