San Ignacio, Belize, wasn’t what we expected, but it completely won us over. Most people pass through just to visit the legendary ATM Cave, but we quickly realized there’s so much more to do here. From lively markets and Mayan ruins to amazing food and wildlife encounters, San Ignacio has a little bit of everything. In this video, we take you through our experience in town, including our favorite places to visit, where we ate, and what surprised us the most.

We started our visit at the San Ignacio Market, one of the busiest spots in town. It’s the perfect place to grab an affordable breakfast or lunch while browsing fresh produce, handmade crafts, and souvenirs. Walking through the town, we came across the iconic Hawkesworth Bridge and spotted iguanas sunbathing by the river. San Ignacio is compact, making it easy to explore on foot, and along the way, we noticed plenty of colorful murals and Creole-style houses that give the town its unique character.

One of the highlights of our trip was visiting the Green Iguana Conservation Project. This hands-on experience lets you get up close with these incredible creatures while learning about conservation efforts to protect them. We also made a stop at Cahal Pech, one of the oldest Mayan ruins in Belize. Unlike more famous sites, it was practically empty when we visited, making it feel like we had the entire place to ourselves.

Unfortunately, our ATM Cave tour was canceled due to unsafe water levels, but there are so many other things to do in San Ignacio that we didn’t have time for. Xunantunich, Belize Botanic Gardens, and the Belize Raptor Center are all highly recommended.

If you love nature and adventure, Green Hills Butterfly Ranch, Mountain Pine Ridge Forest Reserve, and Barton Creek Cave are also great options. A Jungle Pontoon Tour looks like an amazing way to explore Belize’s rivers and waterfalls, and Caracol, one of the most important Mayan ruins in the country, is definitely on our list for next time.

The food in San Ignacio was another big surprise. We had some of our best meals at Ko-Ox Han Nah, a local favorite known for its grilled dishes. Carina’s Fast Food had incredible fry jacks, and the taco stand near the main plaza was perfect for a budget meal. For coffee, we couldn’t get enough of Coffee de los Mayas.

San Ignacio might not be as famous as other parts of Belize, but it has a lot to offer. If you’re planning a trip, this video will give you a better idea of what to expect. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions, and don’t forget to like and subscribe!
