Lochia refers to vaginal discharge that occurs after delivery (childbirth). As a nurse, you'll want to assess lochia in your patients to ensure there are no complications such as hemorrhage or infection.
There are different types or stages of lochia after childbirth: Lochia rubra, lochia serosa, and lochia alba. Lochia rubra can have small clots, which is normal as long as they are smaller than ping pong ball size.
