Turing's Princeton Ph.D. Thesis

About this video

Alan Turing's Princeton Ph.D. thesis is probably one of the two most famous theses written at Princeton University (the other one being that by John Nash of "A Beautiful Mind" fame).

In honor of the centennial of the birth of Alan Turing, considered the father of computer science, Princeton University Press has published Turing's Princeton thesis along with an introduction that puts into context Turing's time at Princeton. Andrew Appel, who narrates this clip, is the chair of the computer science department at Princeton and served as editor for this special PUP imprint.

Appel was interviewed in the tea room of the old Fine Hall, which was home to Princeton's legendary mathematics department in the 1930s. Turing earned his Ph.D. from Princeton in 1938.
