In a blunt and unusually direct statement, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz is now openly accusing Iran of humiliating the United States and questioning Washington’s entire strategy in the escalating conflict. The NATO nation's leader said Iran’s leadership is outmanoeuvring the US, both on the battlefield and at the negotiating table. Speaking to students in Marsberg, Merz claimed Tehran is not just resisting pressure, but actively exploiting diplomatic efforts by getting US officials to travel to Pakistan and then leaving without results. Adding to concerns, Merz pointed to growing risks in one of the world’s most critical oil chokepoints, the Strait of Hormuz.
