A gunman armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives charged a Secret Service checkpoint at the White House Correspondents' Dinner on Saturday night — with President Trump on stage just yards away. One Secret Service agent was shot but survived thanks to a bulletproof vest. The suspect, 31-year-old Cole Tomas Allen from Torrance, California, is now in federal custody.

Allen traveled cross-country by train to avoid TSA screening, checked into the Washington Hilton as a registered guest, and sent a manifesto to family members calling Trump a 'traitor.' Acting AG Todd Blanche confirms the target was Trump and his administration. The attack drew immediate comparisons to the 1981 Reagan assassination attempt at the same hotel. Meanwhile, Trump told 60 Minutes he resisted evacuation and 'wasn't making it that easy' for Secret Service agents.

As Washington reels from Saturday's attack, the Middle East is simultaneously on a knife's edge. Iran has submitted a Hormuz-first proposal — decoupling nuclear talks from the Strait blockade — and Trump is expected in the Situation Room today to review it.
