But tonight, that same man is in federal custody, accused of assembling a long gun—FBI sources say a shotgun—in an unsecured area of the Washington Hilton while the president, the first lady, the vice president, Cabinet members and hundreds of media elites were inside the ballroom. Reports say he charged a Secret Service checkpoint and fired multiple rounds, including one that hit a uniformed Secret Service officer square in the chest.
