TRUE PDF vs. OCR PDF: Key Differences ⚖️

About this video

OCR is a way of taking a scanned PDF and making it text searchable. But it's not perfect. And courts know it. That's why a lot of courts are now requiring that, when feasible, you must submit true PDFs or native PDFs when filing briefs, motions, pleadings, or exhibits.

OCRing a PDF takes a scanned PDF and runs technology against it so that a computer can try to detect what the text is. The problem is, it's not perfect, and it is highly dependent on the quality of the scan and the quality of the print.

When you take a word document, a powerpoint, an excel file, or an email and either Save As a PDF or Print to PDF, that conversion process converts the editable file into PDF file that is 100% accurate in terms of the text that a computer will recognize.

If you have any questions about the difference, or if you have any war stories about this topic, I'd love to hear about them in the comments.
