Nigeria's complex history begins with the Scramble for Africa in the late 19th century, when European powers sought to colonize and divide the continent for their own interests. Nigeria was no exception, and in 1861, the British annexed the city-state of Lagos and expanded their control over the region.

In 1884, the Berlin Conference took place, where European powers gathered to divide Africa amongst themselves. This was where the British claimed the area that would eventually become Nigeria, calling it the "Niger Coast Protectorate". However, it wasn't until 1901 that the British merged the Niger Coast Protectorate with the territories they had acquired in the north to create the "Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria."

The British were primarily interested in Nigeria's natural resources, especially palm oil, which was in high demand at the time. To facilitate their exploitation of these resources, the British set up a system of indirect rule, whereby they ruled through traditional local leaders, rather than directly imposing their own officials.

This system of indirect rule was not without its flaws, as it allowed the local leaders to maintain a great deal of power and influence, while limiting the opportunities for political representation and development for the Nigerian people.

In 1960, Nigeria gained its independence from Britain, but the legacy of colonialism continued to have a profound impact on the country. One of the most significant issues was the way that Nigeria's borders were drawn, which created a country with over 250 different ethnic groups and languages.

This has led to ongoing conflicts and struggles for power, which have often been exacerbated by outside interference from former colonial powers, including Britain. It's worth noting that Nigeria's oil reserves have also made it a target for exploitation by multinational corporations and foreign governments.

In conclusion, the origin of Nigeria as a company set up by British colonizers has had a lasting impact on the country and its people. The legacy of colonialism continues to shape Nigeria's political and economic landscape, as well as its relationship with the rest of the world.
