About this video
Torres Strait islander traditional owners who just lost a long-running case against the federal government for failing to protect them from the impacts of climate change are calling on the prime minister Anthony Albanese to visit the islands.
The Federal Court ruled the government doesnโt owe a duty of care to Torres Strait Islander peoples, although the judge also said the case didnโt fail because there was no merit in their allegations but because negligence law doesnโt allow compensation for matters of government policy.
After the ruling, the delegation of Torres Strait Islanders gathered in front of the court to share the history of Saibai island through dance.
They also want the government to fund a climate adaptation study.
