2025 Cupra Formentor VZ1 333HP Review: Better Than Ever?
Around 4 years ago, I tested what was then the new Cupra Formentor, and to say I was impressed is an understatement. I wasn’t the only one, as the Formentor has become Cupra’s best-selling model, but is the facelift able to continue that success?
Let’s start with the new shiny bits. As you would expect from a facelift, it’s had, well, a facelift. Cupra has said it has been obsessed with design and I think in some aspects, the team could have been a little…too obsessed? It’s still a looker, but I think I prefer the front end of the old car. Mind you, it’s not ugly, although it does seem a bit, dare I say, generic? Sadly, the wonderful Petrol Blue paint has been dropped, and the rest of the palette is, if I’m honest, is a little boring.
It’s not just the exterior that’s seen big changes; the interior has also been tweaked. Despite having a potent 2.0 litre turbo under the bonnet – other engines are available – Cupra is keen to do its bit for the planet. This means that the seats are made using either 73% recycled microfibre, or environmentally conscious leather – maybe that gave the cow a written apology before it met its maker? That’s silly; cows can’t read.
As well as making the car more pleasant to Mother Nature, Cupra always wants to make new Formentor better for those inside the car. Audiophiles will be pleased to hear that there is a new 12-speaker sound system that has been developed with the help of Sennheiser, who know a thing or two about audio. It’s worth noting it’s an optional extra for this trim level, the VZ1, but for the sake of £600 I would say it’s worth it and I’d spec it. Sadly, Cupra UK didn’t spec it for this test version. Mind you the standard stereo pretty good.
The digital cockpit has also been improved and the new, larger 12.9” touchscreen which now has illuminated sliders. There, we can all stop complaining about it now! Although, let’s be honest, it should never have been a problem in the first place.
As I mentioned, this is powered by a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder turbocharged petrol, the famous EA888 of course. This offers 333hp, with power fed to all four wheels via a 7-speed DSG and a new torque-splitter. There’s also a diesel option, a mild hybrid option, and a new plug-in hybrid which offers 272hp and 62 miles of EV driving.
