About this video
The Sahara Desert, already the largest hot desert in the world, is growing at an alarming rate. Over the past century, scientists have observed that the desert has expanded by about 10 percent. This expansion is not only swallowing up fertile land, but also threatening the livelihoods of millions of people across North Africa.
One of the main reasons for this is rising global temperatures. It have led to changes in rainfall patterns, making dry areas even drier. Regions that once received enough rain to support farming and vegetation are now turning into arid, barren land. Human activities like overgrazing, deforestation, and unsustainable farming have also worsened the problem.
The southern edge of the Sahara, known as the Sahel, is the most affected. Communities there depend heavily on agriculture and livestock, but as the desert creeps forward, their resources are disappearing. Crops fail, water becomes scarce, and people are often forced to migrate in search of better living conditions.
To fight back, countries in Africa have launched projects like the “Great Green Wall,” aiming to plant trees across the Sahel to stop the desert’s advance. However, the challenge remains enormous, and urgent global action is needed to slow the Sahara’s monstrous expansion.
