The Wormwood Murders: The Complete Story | THE BEST CREEPYPASTA OF 2026

Project Inferno began as an experimental initiative overseen by a number of influential political leaders. It was later reorganized by Attorney General Charles J. Bonaparte into what became the Bureau of Investigation, and in 1909 it fell under the direction of Attorney General George W. Wickersham. Over time, the BOI evolved into the institution now known as the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

In its earliest form, however, Project Inferno operated very differently. The program paired respected detectives with individuals of questionable criminal background to support local law enforcement across the United States. As the organization transformed into a formal and regulated agency, this controversial predecessor faded into obscurity, largely due to its ethical ambiguities and lack of oversight.

Tonight’s account presents a selection of entries from Inspector Darcy and Inspector McKenzie, offering a brief look at how the initiative functioned in practice. The language of these records has been modernized for clarity, and while minor translation inconsistencies have been addressed, the substance of the narrative remains largely intact.
