In 1950s America, women’s social status seemed to have improved significantly on the surface. However, at a renowned women’s college like Wellesley, the focus of teachers’ instruction still centered on students’ future marriages. They neither encouraged students to proactively explore knowledge they were interested in nor attached importance to cultivating their psychological resilience.
After graduating from college, the elegant and mature Katherine arrived at this school with ideals and enthusiasm to work as an art history teacher. She hoped to spread the concept of free exploration, but encountered obstacles repeatedly in her work. Nevertheless, with her humorous style, straightforward personality, passionate attitude and profound knowledge, Katherine soon won the students’ affection. Several of her students also gradually showed their true selves—such as Joan, who aspired to achieve a career like men, and the lively and active Livvy. However, the news that another student, Betty, was about to get married broke the free and romantic atmosphere on campus.
