Summary
"I'm Not There" is a 2007 musical drama film directed by Todd Haynes and co-written by Haynes and Oren Moverman. It is a biographical film inspired by the life and music of American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan.
In the film, six actors, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, Marcus Carl Franklin, Richard Gere, Heath Ledger, and Ben Whishaw, depict different facets of Dylan's public personas.
A caption at the beginning of the film declares, "This film was inspired by Bob Dylan's music and many lives." This declaration is the only mention of Bob Dylan in the film, except for his songs, and his only appearance in the film is concert footage from 1966 during the final moments of the film.
The title of the film is derived from "I'm Not There," a song from Bob Dylan's album "The Basement Tapes" in 1967, which was not officially released until it appeared on the film's soundtrack album.
The film received a generally favorable response and topped in the lists of The Village Voice, Entertainment Weekly, Salon and The Boston Globe. In particular, Cate Blanchett, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Award, won Best Supporting Actress at the Golden Globe Award and won Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival, received special praise for her performance.
