Russia emerged from a civil war in 1921 as the newly formed Soviet Union, after overthrowing the centuries-old Romanov monarchy. Before its fall and eventual dissolution in 1991, the world's first Marxist-Communist state would become one of the world's largest and most powerful nations, occupying nearly one-sixth of the Earth's land surface. Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Estonia, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan comprised the United Socialist Soviet Republic.
