The Legendary Tony Leung Chiu-wai On Ildikó Enyedi’s "Silent Friend"

Tony Leung Chiu-wai discusses his new film, "Silent Friend," a sweeping story spanning generations through the perspective of a single ginkgo tree.

#SilentFriend is a 2025 historical drama film written and directed by IldikóEnyedi, starring #TonyLeungChiuWai, Léa Seydoux, Luna Wedler, Sylvester Groth, and Martin Wuttke. Set in the university town of Marburg, Germany, the film follows three loosely connected stories unfolding across 1908, 1972, and 2020.

The film had its world premiere in the main competition of the 82nd Venice International Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI Prize and the Marcello Mastroianni Award for Luna Wedler.

Tony Leung Chiu-wai was kind enough to spend some time talking with #NextBestPicture contributor #GiovanniLago about his work and experience making "Silent Friend." The film is now playing in theaters from #12Special.
