Fr Wallace FSSP continues to lead us on our journey through Lent with the Holy Face of Jesus devotion as our guide.

In the Holy Face devotion we are taught to make reparation for sins against the first three Commandments. Receiving Holy Communion while in mortal sin is a sacrilege and also mortal sin against the First Commandment. Sacrilegious Communions are rightly compared to the betraying kiss of Judas.

Just as Judas did an externally loving action but with an evil heart, so also if someone receives Communion in mortal sin, they are doing an externally devout, loving action but with a bad heart. They appear to show union with the Church but internally their soul has turned away from God by mortal sin. The unity they have expressed with the Church is a lie. It is very bad to receive Holy Communion in the state of mortal sin. One needs to go to Confession first.

It is important for us to make reparation for sacrilegious Communions. How much Our Lord’s face was disrespected by a sacrilegious kiss, and so how much is He still disrespected by sacrilegious Communions.
