Simeon Stylites the Elder (c. 390–459 CE) was a Christian ascetic saint who became legendary for his extreme form of devotion. Born in Syria, Simeon withdrew from ordinary life at a young age, first joining a monastery and later seeking ever-greater solitude. Eventually, he chose a most unusual path: living atop a pillar (stylos in Greek), where he would spend the last 37 years of his life in prayer and fasting.

Perched on columns that ranged from 9 to 18 meters (30–60 feet) high, Simeon exposed himself to the elements and gave up earthly comforts as a radical act of faith. Crowds gathered below his pillar, seeking blessings, advice, or healing, and even bishops and emperors corresponded with him.
