Released in 2000, Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th was a horror parody that arrived just months after Scary Movie and was instantly overshadowed by it. Directed by John Blanchard, the film spoofed popular teen slashers such as Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and Halloween, blending them with late-1990s pop culture references. The cast included Tiffani-Amber Thiessen, Tom Arnold, Coolio, Julie Benz, Majandra Delfino, Simon Rex, and Harley Cross, along with cameos from Shirley Jones and Aimee Graham. Originally produced for television by Lions Gate and Regent Entertainment, Shriek was later released on home video after Scary Movie became a massive success, dooming it to be remembered as the “other” parody. This retrospective looks back at how Shriek was developed before Scary Movie, how its release timing destroyed any chance at box office attention, and why it remains an odd footnote in the history of horror comedies.
