About this video
When Reactor 4 at Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded on April 26, 1986, the first to respond were firefighters from Pripyat, who were sent in without knowing the true danger. They believed they were fighting a regular fire, but in reality, they were walking into a radioactive inferno. Without protective gear, they sprayed water on burning graphite and reactor debris, unknowingly exposing themselves to lethal radiation levels. Some started feeling dizzy, nauseous, and even noticed their skin peeling off, but they kept fighting to stop the fire from spreading to other reactors. By morning, they had contained the blaze, preventing an even bigger catastrophe. However, their exposure was too severe, and many of them died in agony within weeks. Their sacrifice saved thousands of lives, but they were never warned about the invisible killer they were up against.
