Evelyn Wood, a teacher from the 1950s, is credited with popularizing the term "speed reading". She wondered why some people read faster than others. One day, while sweeping her hand across a book page, she realized that her hand's movement helped guide her eyes faster across the text. She used this technique, taught it at the University of Utah, and later introduced it to the public.
