SRV HABITS IN ACTION 04

Hello everyone!

Today we're diving into a cycling idea — one of those repeatable licks that can just keep going and going. This one’s called Cycling Lick #1, and it's all about groove, feel, and phrasing. Built from the A minor pentatonic scale, this lick works like a loop — you can repeat it as many times as you want, adjusting the phrasing to fit different parts of the progression. I play it over a 12-bar shuffle blues in A, and here’s how it unfolds (in the full version):

🎵 First, I play the original lick, exactly like I did in the video I posted years ago — starting on beat 4 of the pickup bar, right before the blues form begins.

🎵 Then, I move the lick to bar 5, where the IV chord (D7) kicks in. Here I shorten the phrase and play fewer repetitions to fit the moment.

🎵 Finally, I use it again on bar 9, when the progression hits the V chord (E7). This time I modify the ending of the lick to land properly and wrap things up as the progression heads into the turnaround. In between each "cycling" phrase, I insert connecting licks based on the A Blues scale, which helps everything flow together naturally and adds a bit of variety.
