Pakistan is once again rewriting its own history. As the situation in Afghanistan spirals, the Pakistani establishment is shifting blame rather than confronting decades of strategic miscalculations. Former ISI chief Faiz Hameed, known for his symbolic 2021 Kabul visit and the infamous ‘cup of tea’ moment, is now being painted as the architect of Pakistan’s current crisis. Finance Minister Ishaq Dar’s recent accusations have reignited political and military tensions, alleging that Hameed’s Taliban outreach empowered militant groups like the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), now responsible for a deadly wave of attacks inside Pakistan.

But the narrative conveniently shields the current Army Chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir. Instead of addressing Pakistan’s long-standing policy of cultivating militant proxies for “strategic depth” in Afghanistan, the blame is being pinned on one individual. This is not new. For four decades, Pakistan’s Afghan policy has oscillated between denial, duplicity, and strategic miscalculations — producing instability both across the border and within Pakistan itself.

The resurgence of the TTP is not a sudden mistake. It is the return of a monster Pakistan nurtured, believing it could control it. Today, Pakistan is paying for that belief in blood. The question is no longer who is responsible. The question is whether Pakistan is ready to confront the truth.
