Born free in 1812, he answered Lincoln's call to resettle freed slaves on the Georgia Sea Islands, then became one of Reconstruction's most powerful Black politicians. Campbell organized Black landowners, registered thousands of voters, and stood on the Georgia Senate floor for seven consecutive days while fellow senators tried to remove his right to exist in that chamber.
