Thanksgiving 2 has been officially announced. The new slasher Thanksgiving, which was directed by Eli Roth, is expanded from the parody trailer he contributed to the 2007 throwback double feature Grindhouse. It follows a killer wearing a John Carver mask descending on the town of Plymouth to murder townspeople over Thanksgiving week as revenge for a deadly Black Friday incident the previous year. The thanksgiving movie, which only cost $15 million to make, opened to $10.3 million at the domestic box office and went on to post the smallest second-week drop of any 2023 horror movie.

On his official Instagram, Roth confirmed that the sequel Thanksgiving 2025 has been greenlit.

In Thanksgiving 2 news, Roth revealed that he and screenwriter Jeff Rendell are "gonna take a year off so we can really really write a great script." He also revealed that the sequel is set for a release in 2025, "probably around Thanksgiving."

While it will likely be two years until the movie comes out, and a year before the thanksgiving 2 plot is complete, the Thanksgiving ending makes it quite clear where the story of the sequel will probably pick up. While it seemed that the killer, Sheriff Eric Newlon (Patrick Dempsey), may have died in an explosion, one of the final scenes implied that he could very much be alive. A masked figure dressed as a firefighter was seen leaving the scene, implying that Newlon could possibly return to continue his plans for festive revenge.

There is also an opportunity for quite a few members of the Thanksgiving cast to reprise their roles. While John Carver did kill quite a few people over the course of the movie, many of his potential victims survived at the end. This includes capricious store owner Thomas Wright (Rick Hoffman), his daughter Jessica (Nell Verlaque), Jessica's boyfriend Ryan (Milo Manheim), Jessica's ex Bobby (Jalen Thomas Brooks), and their friend Gabby (Addison Rae).

Thanksgiving 2 updates suggests it will most likely assemble as many returning members of this cast as possible. While it seems probable that quite a few of them will be killed off by John Carver when he returns (presumably on the following year's Thanksgiving), Jessica will probably retain her Final Girl status in yet another showdown with the killer. The sequel could also continue the romantic intrigue between her, Bobby, and Ryan, as she has unresolved feelings for Bobby despite seemingly continuing her relationship with Ryan at the end of the movie.
