India is mourning Wing Commander Namansh Syal, the 34-year-old decorated Indian Air Force fighter pilot who returned home for the last time. His wife, Wing Commander Afshan Akhtar — herself an IAF officer — stood in uniform beside him, offering a final salute that has moved the nation.

Wing Commander Syal’s mortal remains reached his ancestral village this morning, where he was laid to rest with full state honours. Villagers who saw him grow from a bright child into a respected Air Force officer gathered to pay their last respects. He leaves behind his wife, their six-year-old daughter, and parents who now face an irreparable loss.

For the Indian Air Force, this is a moment of deep grief. The IAF remembers him as a dedicated fighter pilot, a thorough professional and a man who flew the Tejas with exceptional skill and unwavering duty. The force stands in solidarity with his family as it mourns one of its finest.

Wing Commander Namansh Syal lost his life during the Dubai Air Show when his indigenous Tejas fighter jet crashed while performing a high-risk negative-G manoeuvre at the Al Maktoum Airbase. The IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry to investigate the cause of the tragic Tejas crash.
