About this video

How did the moon form? 🌕 The Giant Impact Hypothesis suggests that the moon was formed as a result of the collision of Earth and another object known as Theia as shown in this simulation from NASA. There are a few issues with this theory, including that it can’t fully account for the mystery of the missing pieces of Theia. But one theory that helps explain this (but only partially) is that the Moon formed very quickly after the collision. Like…very quickly, potentially only a few hours. This goes a long way to explaining the Moon’s structure and orbit as we see it today. Credit: NASA's Ames Research Center - The simulations used in their research are some of the most detailed of their kind, operating at the highest resolution of any simulation run to study the Moon’s origins or other giant impacts. #space #astronomy #universe #giantimpacthypothesis #moon #theia Among the world's largest science centers, the Museum of Science engages millions of people each year to the wonders of science and technology through interactive exhibitions, digital programs, giant screen productions, and preK – 8 EiE® STEM curricula through the William and Charlotte Bloomberg Science Education Center.
