Manchali is a 1973 Hindi romantic drama movie produced and directed by Raja Nawathe, starring Sanjeev Kumar, Leena Chandavarkar, Nazima and Nirupa Roy. The title track was very catchy and popular. It was one of the best known films with Sanjeev Kumar in a comedy role (others being Vidhaata, Seeta Aur Geeta, and Angoor). The music directors were Laxmikant-Pyarelal. This movie story was based on the novel Swayamber by Satyendra Sharat. There are shades of Taming of the Shrew in how the hero woos the girl.

Plot:
The story follows Leena, a wealthy and stubborn young woman who does not want to marry but needs to in order to inherit her late father’s property. On her best friend Pushpa’s advice, she places a newspaper ad to hire a husband under a fake marriage contract.

When she travels to Dehradun to meet the chosen candidate, she dislikes him at first sight and hides. A clever young man (Sanjeev Kumar) helps her and offers himself as a stand-in husband. Out of options, Leena agrees, and they enter into a contract marriage. To everyone’s surprise, her uncle, aunt, and friends are impressed by this “husband,” who wins their hearts with his wit and good nature.

As events unfold, Leena starts developing genuine feelings for him. When she suspects that he has taken her wealth, the truth is revealed — he has safeguarded everything in her name and even prepared divorce papers, showing his honesty.

At the end, the big revelation comes: this man is not just a hired husband but actually a wealthy landlord in disguise. He only wanted to test Leena’s character. Realizing his sincerity, Leena confesses her love, and they unite happily.
