We fled our homes to sit beneath the trees, hoping the wind might invite us to sing.

ਸਾਨੂੰ ਰਾਹਾਂ ‘ਚ ਸਮੇਂ ਦੇ ਪਿਓ ਨੇ ਟੋਕਿਆ ਤੇ ਸੁੱਕੀ ਮਿੱਟੀ ਵਾਹੁਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
But along the way, the father of time stopped us, and told us to plough the dry, weary soil instead.

How do we summon back the old ways—the carts and the woven cots of our elders?

ਜਿਹੜੀ ਗਰਜ਼ਾਂ ਤੋਂ ਵੱਖਰੀ ਪ੍ਰੀਤ ਸੀ ਜੀ ਉਹਨੂੰ ਕਿੱਦਾਂ ਹਾਕ ਮਾਰੀਏ !
How do we call upon that love, so pure, so selfless, that knew no bargain or gain?

ਸਾਨੂੰ ਬੋਹੜ ਨੇ ਤਾਂ ਥਾਂ ਨੀ ਹੈਗਾ ਆਖ ‘ਤਾ ਅਗਾਹਾਂ ਛਾਉਣੀ ਪਾਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ!
The banyan tree had no space left, told us to move ahead, to find shade elsewhere.

ਕੱਲ੍ਹੀ ਕਿੱਕਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਛਾਂ ਈ ਖਾ ਕੇ ਰਹਿਮ ਹੇਠਾਂ ਪੱਲੀਆਂ ਵਿਛਾਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
Only the lonely acacia showed mercy, letting us rest beneath its shackled shadow, and spread our humble mats beneath its sparse realm.

ਕਿਤੇ ਮੱਸਿਆ ਹੁੰਦੀ ਤਾਂ ਚੱਲੋ ਮੰਨਦੇ ਕਿ ਨੇਰ੍ਹਿਆਂ ਦੇ ਵੱਸ ਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ !
Had it been a moonless night, we’d have accepted the dark, understanding it was beyond our control.

ਏਥੇ ਖਿੜੀਆਂ ਰਾਤਾਂ ‘ਚ ਬੈਠੀ ਚਾਨਣੀ ਵੀ ਦੇਖੋ ਕੁੱਛ ਦੱਸਦੀ ਨਹੀਂ !
But here, the moon itself glows bright, yet even its light refuses to guide us.

ਸਾਨੂੰ ਥੱਕੀਆਂ ਉਮੀਦਾਂ ਦੀ ਗੋਦਾਵਰੀ ਕਿਨਾਰੇ ਉੱਤੇ ਸੌਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
The weary Godavari (river) of our hopes asks us to sleep along its quiet banks.

ਪਿੱਛੋਂ ਮਾਲਕਾਨਾ ਹੱਕ ਜੇਹੀ ਅੰਮੜੀ ਘਰਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਮੁੜ ਆਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
But from behind, like a mother claiming her rightful bond, our homes call us to return.

ਕਿਤੇ ਜਾਨਕੀ ਦੇ ਜੇਹੇ ਜੇਰੇ ਵਾਲ਼ੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜੱਗ ਨੇ ਸਬੂਤ ਮੰਗਿਆ !
Somewhere, like Janaki (Sita), the world demanded proof of a woman’s purity.

ਕਿਤੇ ਆਬਰੂ ਦੇ ਨਾਲ਼ ਸੌਹਾਂ ਪਾਲ਼ੀਆਂ ਦਾ ਜੱਗ ਨੇ ਸਬੂਤ ਮੰਗਿਆ !
Elsewhere, it asked for evidence from those who kept their vows with dignity.

ਕਿਤੇ ਬੋਝ ਹੈ ਜਹਾਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਕਦਰਾਂ ਦਾ ਫ਼ੈਸਲੇ ਕਰਾਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
Somewhere, the weight of worldly values demands a final verdict.

ਕਿਤੇ ਆਸ ਦੀ ਮਲੂਕੜੀ ਜ੍ਹੀ ਮੱਤ ਜੋ ਸਿਆਣਪਾਂ ਲਿਆਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
And somewhere, the gentle counsel of hope urges wisdom to take its place.

ਉਹ ਤੂੰ ਕਾਹਦਾ ਸਰਤਾਜ ਤੇਰਾ ਆਪਣਾ ਵਜੂਦ ਇੱਕ ਰਾਗ ‘ਚ ਨਹੀਂ !
And you—what kind of “Sartaaj” (the artist) are you, when your own being doesn’t reside in one Raaga (melody) !

ਨਾ ਤਾਂ ਹੌਸਲਾ ਬਿਲਾਵਲਾਂ ‘ਚ ਬੋਲਦਾ ਤੇ ਟੋਡੀ ਵੀ ਵੈਰਾਗ ‘ਚ ਨਹੀ’ !
Your courage doesn’t speak in ‘Raag Bilawal’, nor does sorrow echo in ‘Raag Todi’ !

ਤੇਰੇ ਮੱਥਿਆਂ ‘ਚ ਵੱਜਦਾ ਤਿਲੰਗ ਤੇ ਆਹ ਦਿਲ ਮੇਘ ਲਾਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
‘Raag Tilang’ plays upon your forehead , while your heart calls out for ‘Raag Megh’ to rise with its clouds.

ਤੇਰੇ ਸਾਹਾਂ ਦੀ ਸਾਰੰਗੀ ਪੀਲੂ ਛੇੜ ਕੇ ਆਸਾਵਰੀ ਸੁਨਾਉਣ ਨੂੰ ਕਹੇ !
The ‘Sarangi’ (a bow instrument) of your breath stirs the notes of ‘Raag Peelu’, yet longs to sing the soul of ‘Raag Asavari’ !!
