On September 17, 2025, a California Highway Patrol (CHP) pursuit unfolded in San Diego, California, after officers spotted a stolen Toyota Tacoma speeding southbound on Interstate 5 near Imperial Avenue in National City.
The driver, suspected of DUI, was clocked at 85 mph, swerving between lanes before fleeing from CHP officers when they initiated a traffic stop. The high-speed chase reached speeds of 100 mph, with the suspect dangerously weaving through freeway traffic before abruptly exiting onto the Civic Center Drive exit. Moments later, the stolen pickup truck crashed into a raised concrete barrier and then down a dirt embankment, colliding with a parked flatbed truck at Cleveland Avenue and 14th Street in front of ABC Metals Inc.
CHP officers quickly arrived at the crash scene, initiating a felony stop. The suspect, later identified as Manuel Lopez, attempted to flee on foot but fell on the sidewalk just around the corner, where he was taken into custody. He was transported by ambulance to UCSD Medical Center and later released from custody by the California Highway Patrol.
The preliminary alcohol screening was done at the hospital at 0440 hours and submitted to the San Diego Sheriff's Department Crime Lab for further testing.
An arrest report was submitted to the San Diego County District Attorneyβs Office for review and criminal prosecution for the following charges:
