Starmer fights for his political life

The sword of Damocles was hovering over Keir Starmer's seat in the cabinet this morning.

Scores of his own MPs had publicly called for him to go, some around the table apparently shared that view privately. But the PM vowed to “get on with governing” and what followed seems more like a Mexican standoff… none of the contenders - the likes of Wes Streeting or Andy Burnham yet willing or able to openly challenge him.

Instead, the sight of Starmer's allies coming out that door to assure the media their man is going nowhere. We have been watching the day's events unfold.
