Guruvayur Sri Krishna Temple, a famous Hindu temple located in Guruvayur, India, is one of the most crowded places of worship in Kerala and nearby states. In this temple, Lord Vishnu is worshiped in the form of his avatar Lord Krishna, called 'Guruvayurappan' (due to Guru, the teacher and Vayu, the wind brought the idol of the deity to the place)- a four armed standing Maha Vishnu (carrying the conch Panchajanya, the discus Sudarshana Chakra, the mace Kaumodaki, and a lotus with a holy basil garland), represents his majestic form as revealed to Krishna's parents Vasudeva and Devaki during Krishna's birth. Hence Guruvayur Temple is known as 'Dwaraka of South India / Dakshina Dwaraka'.

The main festivals of this temple are- the ten day festival in the month of Kumbham (starting with flag hoisting on Pooyam), Ashtami Rohini / Janmashtami (Birthday of Lord Krishna) in Chingam, Guruvayur Ekadasi in the shukla paksha (bright fortnight) of Vrischikam and Vishu in Medam. The temple's sub-deities are Ganapathi, Ayyappan and Bhagavathi, and there are two sub-temples each, one for Ganapathi and the other for Nagadevata nearby the temple. One of its replica temples is Uttara Guruvayurappan Temple located at Mayur Vihar in Delhi.

'Sri Naradiya Purana' mentions how Janamejaya was cured of leprosy by taking refuge under the feet of Guruvayuruppan. The Pandavas handed over the kingdom to their grandson Parikshit, and left for the forest to spend their last days. Parikshith died of the curse of a saint, who cursed that he will die of snake bite by Takshaka, the king of serpents. After the death, he was succeeded by his son Janamejaya, who conducted a sacrifice to destroy all the snakes of the world including Takshaka, who was the cause of his father's death . Hundreds of thousands of snakes fell into the sacrificial fire and were killed, but the sacrifice was stopped by a Brahmin called Astika, before Takshaka was killed. Since Janamejaya was responsible for the death of millions of snakes, he was afflicted with leprosy. He lost all hope of a cure. One day Sage Atreya (son of Atri) came before Janamejaya and told him to take refuge under the feet of Krishna at Guruvayoor for blessings. He immediately rushed there and spent the next ten months worshiping the God at Guruvayur. At the end of ten months, he returned home hale and hearty and took the astrologer to task for making a false prediction. The astrologer told him that he would find the mark of a snakebite on his left leg. He had escaped death only because he was at that time in a temple (Guruvayur) where Anantha (the emperor of serpents) was present.

The 'Vaikuntha Ekadasi' (Swargavathil Ekadasi) is known as 'Guruvayur Ekadasi' in Guruvayur Temple, celebrated in the Mandala season of Sabarimala Temple. Ekadasi Vilakku starts a month before the Ekadasi day. The Navami (ninth) day and Dashami (tenth) day are also important. On Ekadasi (eleventh) day, there is a grant elephant procession to the Parthasarathi temple since it is regarded as 'Geethopadesham Day' also. On Dwadasi (twelfth) day, there is a custom of offering a token amount called 'Dwadasi Panam' in Koothambalam. The Punathoor Kotta elephant yard (Aanakkotta) is the home to the largest population of captive male elephants, donated by devotees to the temple. Guruvayur Keshavan was a famous elephant among them. Every devotee who goes to Guruvayoor Temple will also visits its nearest Mammiyur Shiva Temple also. The Mammiyoor temple is a part of the 108 famous Shiva temples in Kerala, where Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvathi worshipped in the form of 'Uma Maheshwara'. Shivaratri and Ashtami Rohini are the major festivals of this temple.
